A Day in Wisconsin’s Amish Country

We left our Bed and Breakfast, located near Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin on a late June morning. It was a beautiful warm day in the making. We drove north through Viroqua and Westby and onto Hwt 27 heading toward Cashton.

Prairie du Chien Attractions

Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin is a small city situated on the Mississippi River in the southwest corner of the state. The city is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers which flow together just south of the city. Four hundred foot tall, wooded bluffs rise along each side of the Mississippi. Enjoy the wonderful drives and views and also take in some very interesting attractions.

Nordic Ski Jump Event in Wisconsin

On February 2nd and 3rd, 2012 the Snowflake Ski Club located near Westby, WI will sponsor its annual Snowflake Ski Jump. Some of the world’s best jumpers will gather for this event, held on Snowflake’s Olympic-size hill.

Wisconsin September Events

A couple of great events are scheduled for the scenic Southwest Wisconsin Driftless Area in September. Enjoy horses, classic carriages, and great art.

On Sept 10/11 travel to Prairie du Chien and the Villa Louis to enjoy the annual Carriage Classic. The Villa Louis is one of Wisconsin’s state historic sites. It is a beautifully restored Victorian house that was home to Wisconsin’s first millionaire family, the Dousmans. The Villa has a long history of horse breeding and elegance and the Carriage Classic will bring more than 100 beautifully restored carriages to the grounds for demonstrations of horsemanship and carriage driving.

C’mon down to the Kickapoo Country Fair!

Havin' fun at the Kickapoo Country Fair

Organic Valley is hosting its annual Kickapoo Country Fair at the OV headquarters premises in LaFarge, Wisconsin on July 30th.    The folks at OV call it a “picnic party” and are extending the invitation to all who hear to come and “eat, laugh and learn together”.  They wish to share this area, called a paradise by many, the Driftless Region of Southwest Wisconsin and the Kickapoo Valley.

The fair offers many interesting activities, but of course, is all about food, lots of food; locally grown or raised, fresh and organic.  There is plenty of food, as the Driftless Region boasts the largest concentration of organic farms in the U.S.

Civil War Re-enactment, Boscobel, WI

On the weekend of August 5-7 the small city of Boscobel in Southwest Wisconsin will again be the site of a Civil War re-enactment. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, so it seems particularly appropriate to remember the sacrifices this country made to respect all people, to stay whole, and to thereby become the great country that we are.

Soldiers Grove: The B&B Capitol of Wisconsin

In Wisconsin there is one Bed and Breakfast for every 12,500 residents. However, in the little Western Wisconsin village of Soldiers Grove, located about one hour south of La Crosse, there is one B&B for each 200 residents.

Author of Amish Novels Researches Cashton Settlement

Last week, Lonesome Hollow hosted Vanetta Chapman and her husband, from Texas.  Vanetta came to Wisconsin to research the Wisconsin Amish for her upcoming  book  series of Amish mysteries.   Her book, A Simple Amish Christmas, was published last October, and she has  begun releasing a series of books called the Shipshewana Amish Mystery Series. Falling to Pieces,  A Quilt Shop Mystery will be released November, 2011.

Mother’s Day Music, Dance, Shopping

If you are looking for a truly unique Mother’s Day experience, look no further than the Kickapoo River village of Gays Mills, Wisconsin. From May 6 through May 8, 2011 this picturesque village  will hold its 19th annual Folk Festival of Music and Dance. Gays Mills is located in Southwest Wisconsin, thirty minutes northeast of Prairie du Chien, or a little more than one hour south of La Crosse. Highlights of this year’s Festival include a Friday evening Square Dance and a Saturday Rodeo. Music workshops are also scheduled for Saturday, including fiddle, banjo, and clogging; a writers workshop is also on tap. You also won’t want to miss the Saturday chili dinner and evening concert.
