Civil War Re-enactment, Boscobel, WI
July 13th, 2011 by knapik
On the weekend of August 5-7 the small city of Boscobel in Southwest Wisconsin will again be the site of a Civil War re-enactment. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, so it seems particularly appropriate to remember the sacrifices this country made to respect all people, to stay whole, and to thereby become the great country that we are.
Westby Wisconsin Nordic Ski Jump
January 10th, 2011 by knapik
Westby Wisconsin, located in the soutwest corner of the state only a half hour from LaCrosse, is home to an annual nordic ski jumping tournament. On February 4 and 5, 2011, the Snowflake Ski Club will host its annual “big hill” event. US and international jumpers will compete on a 118 meter hill. The jumpers approach 50 mph as they soar off the jump and down the hill. Many olympic jumpers use the Westby event as training for major worlwide jumping competition.
Snowflake Ski Club was founded in 1922 and it is one of only two remaining all-volunteer large hill ski jumping clubs in the Western Hemisphere. This is a tribute to the city of Westby (population 2000) and to the dedicated local volunteers. On Friday, February 4 there will be open training at night, under the lights. Following the jumping there will be live music and fireworks. The main competition will be held on Saturday, February 5 starting at noon. Live music will go throughout the day on Saturday. Snowflake Ski Club offers free admission to US military members.
Westby is located in Wisconsin’s famed Driftless Area and is a three hour drive from Minneapolis, about four hours from the Chicago western suburbs. Excellent lodging and restauarants can be found nearby.

Wisconsin Winter Outdoor Fest
December 20th, 2009 by knapik
The Kickapoo Valley Reserve is located in the heart of southwest Wisconsin’s Driftless Area. The Reserve offers more than 8000 acres of rugged landscape, a succession of ridges and valleys that predate the last ice age. If you are anywhere near LaCrosse, Wisconsin on January 9, 2010 take the time to drive the 30-40 minutes southeast into the Kickapoo Reserve. The 2010 Kickapoo Reserve Winter Festival includes chain saw scuplture demonstrations, guided ice cave tours, a birds of prey demonstration, horse-drawn wagon and bobsled rides, chili and bread contests, and a candlelight hike & ski.

The Kickapoo Reserve encompasses about a 20 mile section of Wisconsin’s “crookedest” river, the Kickapoo River. You will find the Reserve’s landscapes to be natural, dramatic, and near pristine. More than 20 miles of hiking and cross country ski trails are offered. The Reserve has a wonderful Visitor’s Center that relates much of the history of the Kickapoo Valley, including the failed La Farge dam project. Read the rest of this page »
Day Trip to Prairie du Chien
September 25th, 2009 by knapik
When you are able to get away for longer than a weekend, we can recommend several great day trips for guests at our Southern Wisconsin bed and breakfast. It is lovely to have the time to take advantage of our 160 acres of extremely private land. Long walks through the forests, especially at this time of year, will invigorate your senses and give you a new outlook on life. When you feel fully refreshed, consider a day trip down to Prairie du Chien, along the Mississippi River.
There are several interesting upcoming events in and near Prairie du Chien. The weekend of October 3rd and 4th you may choose to spend some time at Effigy Mounds National Monument, partaking in the Hawk Watch and benefiting from one of the best spots to view the fall migration in the state. Or you may head over to the Shihata Orchard Fest, just north of Prairie du Chien, for some apple picking, apple cider, and a pumpkin patch. If cruises are more your cup of tea, look into the Fall Foliage Cruises aboard the Mississippi Explorer Cruises. They depart every Saturday and Sunday in October at noon from the St. Feriole Island river front in Prairie du Chien.
There is a lovely circular route to and from our bed and breakfast Wisconsin and Prairie du Chien. One route takes you along the Mississippi River, and the other through lovely rural Southern Wisconsin. We are currently running a fall special to help entice you to extend your stay. See you soon!
