Farmers Markets in Driftless Wisconsin
One of the most popular Farmers Markets in the Driftless Area is the Viroqua Farmers Market, which brings new meaning to the term buying local. Here, all of the 50+ vendors come from a 100-mile radius of the market, highlighting the abundance of fresh produce from Driftless Wisconsin farms. Not only will you find abundant organic produce here, but you’ll also find things like maple syrup, canned goods, honey, soap, meat, jewelry, art, furniture, fresh flowers, Amish rugs and quilts, baked goods, lotions and other seasonal goods. Open May through October, we can’t think of a better place to explore on a Saturday in the Driftless Area. The Prairie Street Farmers Market in Prairie du Chien is also a popular place to browse, where they feature free local entertainment and a great variety of local goods as well.
Other regional farmers markets throughout the Driftless Area are the Gays Mills Farmers Market, located just a short distance from our Bed and Breakfast Inn, and the Market in the Park in Ferryville. Known for the variety of apples grown by sevel local orchards, the Gays Mills Farmers Market is a good place to find your favorite varietal. The market in Ferryville is a wonderful place to find garden plants, nursery items, home made preserves, crafts items, flea market items and a great selection of Amish craft items, such as baskets, throw rugs, and toys. Farmers Markets truly are amongst the best places to get a true feeling for the people and the culture of a certain place, and that couldn’t be more true about the varied markets of the Driftless Area. Our family stayed in mid-August. We had a very relaxing visit. The house is comfortable and the property is encircled by hills, making the experience a unique getaway. We enjoyed building bonfires each night, hanging out in the nice living room and taking the surprisingly lengthy hikes that are all on the property. Mornings started with coffee on the second story porch overlooking the meadow and hills, evenings ended with zero noise except that made by nature or our family. Each night there was a canopy of bright stars that weren't diluted by light pollution. We enjoyed hiking Wildcat Mountain, canoeing down the Kickapoo, roasting smores and hanging out. My son and I tried our luck at trout fishing in a nearby stream (Tainter?). It was an enjoyable, unique experience although we didn't catch anything. We'll be back.
