Holiday Shopping in Driftless Wisconsin
You won’t find the traditional big box stores in the Driftless Area. Instead, you’ll find something far better. You’ll find festive, quaint shops clamoring at the chance to sell you the often hand-crafted, locally made goods that our region is known for. Walk down the streets of Viroqua downtown, and enjoy the sense of exploration this season brings us. Spend time browsing the local art that the Driftless Area is famous for at the VIVA Artists Cooperative, then stop in for some worldly goods at a fair-trade emporium or browse the shelves at the local bookstore. There are plenty of other unique stores to browse, including antique stores, a knit shop, a fly shop, a music store, and much more. Head into Prairie du Chien, where you’ll find that the newly revitalized main street features a wonderful variety of antique and gift shops, as well as a large hunting/camping/fishing outfitter, which is the perfect place to shop for the outdoor lover in your life.
If you know someone who’s into the local food movement, then Driftless Wisconsin won’t disappoint. There’s a wonderful local food cooperative in Viroqua, where you can find local maple syrup, local honey, and home-canned jellies, jams, chutneys, salsas, and sauces. Stop in for an afternoon of wine at Vernon Vineyards, and while there pick up a bottle or two to take back as a great holiday gift. We would be remiss to discuss holiday shopping in Driftless Wisconsin without mentioning the amazing variety of hand-crafted Amish goods that can be found nearby. Enjoy a day of scenic winter driving through the Driftless countryside, and as you make your way be on the lookout for handmade signs guiding you to Amish homes. There, you’ll find a variety of goods for sale, including quilts, oak and willow furniture, rugs, other handmade goods, and delicious candies. You can also head to the village of shops just outside of Cashton on State Highway 33. While you’re up there, you might as well pick up some delicious Wisconsin cheese at Pasture Pride Cheese. As you can see, the holiday shopping in Driftless Wisconsin is unique and varied. Spend some time getting into the Christmas spirit with us at our Driftless Area Vacation Rental this winter.

Our family stayed in mid-August. We had a very relaxing visit. The house is comfortable and the property is encircled by hills, making the experience a unique getaway. We enjoyed building bonfires each night, hanging out in the nice living room and taking the surprisingly lengthy hikes that are all on the property. Mornings started with coffee on the second story porch overlooking the meadow and hills, evenings ended with zero noise except that made by nature or our family. Each night there was a canopy of bright stars that weren't diluted by light pollution. We enjoyed hiking Wildcat Mountain, canoeing down the Kickapoo, roasting smores and hanging out. My son and I tried our luck at trout fishing in a nearby stream (Tainter?). It was an enjoyable, unique experience although we didn't catch anything. We'll be back.
