Driftless Wisconsin’s Organic Food Movement
Agriculture has been a fixture of Driftless Wisconsin’s identity for hundreds of years, so it should come as no surprise that it’s still highly valued in the towns here. Despite the agricultural changes throughout the state, you’ll find that Wisconsin is a top producer of organic goods, and one of the keystone businesses to the industry, Organic Valley, is right here in the Driftless Area. Organic Valley is a farmer owned food co-op, including over 1800 farms across the country, that pioneered the production of Organic Foods and brought the industry into the forefront of modern agriculture. Today you can tour many of the farms in the co-op, sample the products, and enjoy learning more about and connecting with the foods we eat today.
In the Driftless Area, you’ll find plenty of wonderful farmers markets and food co-ops to visit, as well as a variety of restaurants featuring locally sourced and mostly organic ingredients as well. Two of the most popular markets are Viroqua’s Farmer’s Market and the Viroqua Food Coop. The farmer’s market is a wonderful place to shop local, as all of the 50+ vendors come from a 100-mile radius of the market. The co-op is also a wonderful place to find natural goods, including fresh local and organic meats and cheese, artisan beer and wines from local vineyards and from across the world, and so much more. They also have teamed up with Driftless Folk School to offer a variety of fun and informative classes and events centered on the local organic food movement. If you’re looking for a delicious meal sourced with the freshest local ingredients, we recommend heading to local favorite farm to table restaurant, the Driftless Cafe. Book your room at our Vacation Rental today, an get in on the delicious local food movement in the Driftless Area.

Our family stayed in mid-August. We had a very relaxing visit. The house is comfortable and the property is encircled by hills, making the experience a unique getaway. We enjoyed building bonfires each night, hanging out in the nice living room and taking the surprisingly lengthy hikes that are all on the property. Mornings started with coffee on the second story porch overlooking the meadow and hills, evenings ended with zero noise except that made by nature or our family. Each night there was a canopy of bright stars that weren't diluted by light pollution. We enjoyed hiking Wildcat Mountain, canoeing down the Kickapoo, roasting smores and hanging out. My son and I tried our luck at trout fishing in a nearby stream (Tainter?). It was an enjoyable, unique experience although we didn't catch anything. We'll be back.
