Wisconsin Trout Fishing
It probably feels strange to even mention the Wisconsin Trout fishing season during the dead of winter. But, believe it or not, the season does sneak up. Hopefully that means we start to see some warmer weather, a little less snow and ice on the ground, some new flower blossoms, and plenty of fish in the streams. Wisconsin has a rich trout fishing history, and has more than 10,000 miles of trout streams, creeks, and rivers famous for their cold, clean waters full of trout and other game fish. Statewide, we think the Driftless Area trout fishing is unmatchable. If you are a true Wisconsin trout fishing enthusiast, then don’t miss your chance to fish at the start of trout fishing season. Book your stay at our Wisconsin Vacation Rental, where you’ll be within easy reach of some of Wisconsin’s best trout fishing grounds.
Wisconsin Trout Fishing
I can think of few things more relaxing than fly fishing along a serene Wisconsin river, surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the stunning Driftless Area. The Driftless Area is known for its trout streams, many of which are class I rated streams. Favorites include Timber Coulee Creek or the West Fork of the Kickapoo River, both of which have undergone extensive habitat restoration, and now feature high quality cold-waters that can sustain natural populations of brook and brown trout. Tainter Creek is also a local favorite Class I stream for Wisconsin trout fishing, which winds through woodlands and farm fields as it makes its way to the Kickapoo River. The lower Wisconsin River is popular spot to find anglers, and there are a lot of game fish in the main river itself. For specific stream information, check out the trout stream maps produced by the Wisconsin DNR.
We think one of the best ways to make the most of your Wisconsin trout fishing adventure is to find one of the area’s knowledgeable guides, who know all the best spots and often have access to private land. The Driftless Angler is a full service fly shop located on the historic main street in Viroqua, Wisconsin. Here, you can find all of the gear you need, wonderful information on local waters, as well as local guides to help you improve your skills and unlock the secrets of some lesser known creeks. Other reputable guides in the region are Silver Doctor Fly Fishing, and Spring Creek Specialties. Take advantage of the early catch and release trout fishing season, starting March 1st through the end of April. Book your stay at our Driftless Area Vacation Rental, and get started on your Wisconsin trout fishing adventure.

Our family stayed in mid-August. We had a very relaxing visit. The house is comfortable and the property is encircled by hills, making the experience a unique getaway. We enjoyed building bonfires each night, hanging out in the nice living room and taking the surprisingly lengthy hikes that are all on the property. Mornings started with coffee on the second story porch overlooking the meadow and hills, evenings ended with zero noise except that made by nature or our family. Each night there was a canopy of bright stars that weren't diluted by light pollution. We enjoyed hiking Wildcat Mountain, canoeing down the Kickapoo, roasting smores and hanging out. My son and I tried our luck at trout fishing in a nearby stream (Tainter?). It was an enjoyable, unique experience although we didn't catch anything. We'll be back.
